Combine the drive and determination in sports of Kobe Bryant, the spiritual wisdom of John Wooden, the academics of Sandra Day O’Connor and the fashion sense of Heidi Klum and you may have the right combination to describe NCAA Division II volleyball player Stephanie McBride.
McBride is a junior on the women’s volleyball team at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix. The combination of academics, athletics, spirituality and tolerance is what drew me to GCU, says McBride, a transfer student from The Masters College in Southern California.
McBride leaves her mark. “Stephanie has such an authentic and genuinely kind spirit,” says Kristin Stockfisch, Arizona Fellowship of Christian Athletes campus representative. “She is a force to be reckoned with on the volleyball court, but balances her tenacity with a truly selfless heart.”
On the court, at 5 foot 11, McBride plays the middle/outside position with fierce determination while also being the unofficial spiritual leader on the team, according to teammates. One of her favorite biblical quotes for the team is Isaiah 41:13, “For I am the LORD, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.” The biblical verse has special meaning for McBride who has escaped major injuries over her playing career.
McBride was introduced to the FCA when she arrived in Phoenix by local coordinator Kristin Stockfisch, who conducts devotions with the GCU women’s volleyball team. “It was her weekly devotions that got me hooked with FCA,” says McBride.
McBride attended and was a team leader at an FCA event in Flagstaff in July. As a team or huddle leader, McBride was responsible for 12 high school-aged volleyball players for two nights and three days. “Attending the camp renewed and re-energized my spirituality and commitment to God. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life,” said McBride.
Stockfisch called her role modeling, “such a joy for me. She is a natural leader and will undoubtedly do great things at GCU and wherever God may lead her.”
Longtime friend, Kristen Jenewein, says she has never met anyone more dedicated and committed to athletic excellence. “She embodies the meaning of self-discipline. Her sweet disposition and zest for life makes her endearing to everyone she meets. I have been blessed to know her.”
McBride is equally determined in her academic life. She carries a 3.9 grade point average and is determined to attend law school at Georgetown University or Regent Law School in Virginia. She loves politics and world history. “A couple of years ago, I went on a trip to Washington D.C. and loved it. I wanted to spend one day studying each monument. It was so inspiring,” said McBride
She isn’t all work and no play. McBride owns more high heeled shoes than tennis shoes. “I love sports, but also love to be a girl. Shopping is one of my favorite sports off the court,” said McBride.
